Manpower Planning, also known as Workforce Planning, is the process of forecasting and planning an organization’s future personnel requirements based on environmental analysis and organizational objectives. It ensures that the right number of people, with the right skills, are available at the right time to meet business needs.
This process applies core management principles to the procurement, development, and retention of employees. It addresses the natural depletion of the workforce as well as changing organizational requirements in terms of the quality, skills, and nature of talent needed.
Workforce planning involves assessing the organization’s current workforce position and determining how to move toward the desired future state. Various forecasting and analytical techniques are used to support this process. Regression analysis is applied where a linear relationship exists between causal and target variables, while work-study techniques are used to calculate labor requirements based on operational workload.
Future labor demand is determined by analyzing workforce inflows and outflows, supported by managerial judgment and workforce movement data. This enables organizations to anticipate staffing gaps, manage talent movement, and make informed decisions related to recruitment, development, and succession planning.
